Relationship and Sex Education at Our Lady of Mount Carmel RC Primary School
At Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Relationship, Sex, and Health Education (RSHE) is recognised as a vital part of a child’s personal development. It is a lifelong journey of learning about physical, emotional, moral and spiritual growth. Rooted in our Catholic values, it promotes an understanding of the importance of loving and committed relationships, including the vocation of marriage and family life, built on respect, care and love.
RSHE helps children develop a positive sense of self, an understanding of their identity as children of God, and a recognition of their dignity as human beings. It explores what it means to be fully human, to live in right relationship with oneself and others, and to make moral decisions guided by conscience. The programme also provides age-appropriate education on sex, sexuality, and sexual health, always delivered within the context of the Church’s teaching.
This learning encourages empathy, responsibility, and mutual respect, helping pupils form healthy relationships and fostering a strong sense of self-worth and confidence.
We use the ‘Life to the Full’ programme, produced by Ten:Ten Resources. This scheme is fully aligned with the Department for Education’s statutory guidance for RSHE and is built upon the Catholic Education Service’s ‘Model Catholic RSE Curriculum’.
More than just a series of lessons, Life to the Full is a comprehensive and engaging programme of learning. It includes:
· Interactive video content
· Story-based activities
· A variety of creative teaching strategies
· Opportunities for reflection and classroom prayer
The programme also provides support for parents and carers, helping them to engage with their child’s learning and reinforce these important messages at home.
